It has been observed that a slight uniaxial compressional stress causes the spontaneous polarization to disappear in tetrachlorozincate-tetramethyl-ammonium crystals. The effect is reversible and is associated with the proximity of the state of the crystal to the critical point on the stress-temperature phase diagram.
