Direct experimental proof of the existence of delocalized states below the Fermi level under conditions corresponding to the integer quantum Hall effect

The Hall component of the conductivity, axy, has been measured in samples in the Corbino geometry under conditions corresponding to the integer quantum Hall effect. The behavior of axy as a function of the filling factor agrees with the picture in which the quantum Hall effect occurs as a result of extended states below the Fermi level.
