Magnetic dipole and electric dipole rare-earth modes observed in the submillimeter absorption spectra and the far-IR reflection spectra of the orthoferrite TmFe03 stem from electron transitions within the ground multiplet of the Tm3 + ion. The symmetry is determined. The observed electronic excitations are classified.
