First measurement of the x-ray emission of σ-atoms by means of a crystal-diffraction spectrometer
The intensity and energy of the 5g-4/ transition of the 1~-nC atom have been measured by a crystal-diffraction spectrometer with a Cauchois layout at the proton synchrotron of the Institute of High-Energy Physics. The mass of the Σ~ hyperon was found to be 1197.417± 0.040 MeV/c2. This figure is in excellent agreement with the value found from studies of hyperon decays, while it is slightly at odds with a BNL experiment on heavy Σ" atoms. There is a promising outlook for studying Σ~ atoms by the crystal-diffraction method, in which a target is bombarded by a beam of high-energy protons.
