Observation of anomalous absorption by ammonia in intense IR laser light
Observations reveal that pumping ammonia molecules on an individual vibrational-rotational transition by intense light from a TEA C02 laser (/£ 106 W/cm2) results in an effective radiative excitation of these molecules from other rotational states of both symmetric and asymmetric vibrational levels of the v2 mode, which is excited. The transitions from these states are detuned 50-100 cm from the pump frequency. This result should be taken into consideration in analysis of the multiphoton IR excitation of molecules.
