The F-odd impurity amplitude El PNC= — (1.15±0.25) X I0~9/|e|a0( — QWIN) (a0 is the first Bohr radius, Qw is the weak nuclear charge, and N is the number of neutrons) is calculated for the forbidden Ml transition 3£)1—>'50 in ytterbium. The result confirms that parity-nonconservation effects are stronger in ytterbium than in cesium or thallium. The Stark amplitude β= — (138±30)ag, required for interpreting experiments searching for Ρ violation, is also calculated. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
