The second optical harmonic arises near the surface in the superconducting ceramic Laj 8Sr0 2CuO4 during excitation by a copper-vapor laser. The corresponding optical nonlinearity is only an order of magnitude smaller than that of the typical ferroelectric barium titanate. It is concluded that at room temperature this ceramic contains clusters of a polar phase with a polarization direction perpendicular to the directions of metallization bonds.
