Visible luminescence of desorbed atoms resulting from the dynamics of self-trapped excitons in neon

The amplitude and phase characteristics of the cathodoluminescence spectra of solid neon in the visible region have been measured. A series of narrow lines is shown to result from a self-trapping of ρ excitons near the surface of the crystal and a subsequent desorption of excited atoms into vacuum.
