Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of a microcrystal of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O9-y

A technique for producing a vacuum tunnel junction between the needle of a scanning tunneling microscope and the superconducting crystal YBa2Cu309 _ y is described. The distribution of the energy gap has been measured along surface areas ~ 1 μηι2 of microcrystals at 4 K.
