Incommensurate phases near multicritical points
A condition is formulated for distinguishing order parameters which satisfy the Lifshitz criterion but which induce incommensurate phases. Cascades of phase transitions for four-component order parameters are examined as an example. A suggestion is made regarding the magnetic structure of a modulated phase of CeAl2.
