Magnetic-field-induced structural phase transition in the virtual Jahn-Teller elastic material TmPO4
A structural phase transition of a new type—a stimulated cooperative Jahn-Teller effect—has been observed experimentally and studied in rare-earth Jahn-Teller compounds. The type of transition, the order parameter, and the threshold magnetic field for this type of structural phase transition have been determined from measurements of the magnetostriction of the virtual Jahn-Teller elastic material TmP04 along various crystallographic directions in a pulsed magnetic field.
