The dynamics of an intense ultrashort light pulse in a Raman-active medium is analyzed in the case in which the pulse length is short in comparison with the time ii ~1, where fiil = E2 — Ex is the energy difference between the levels participating in the Raman scattering. Some new nonlinear effects can arise: the existence οϊίπη pulses of a self-induced transparency of the Raman-active medium and the generation, from a high-frequency signal, of video pulses of an electromagnetic field without a carrier frequency. The physics of the processes is new in a qualitative sense when the dynamics of the field is governed by a change in the energy of the photons rather than by a change in their number.
