Effect of adsorbed elements on the secondary emission of metal ions
A mechanism which explains the rapid increase in the emission of positive secondary metal ions upon adsorption of electronegative elements at the surface is proposed. The adsorbate induces an electrostatic potential, which causes a shift of the electronic level. This shift increases the effective neutralization distance of the emitted ion and exponentially decreases the neutralization probability.
