After the cleaving of germanium in liquid helium the surface conductivity for the mirror-smooth (111) cleavage surfaces is σ< 10~9 ohm_1, whereas for defect surfaces it can reach values of σ~ 10 ~5 ohm _1. After intermediate warming at 7>40 К the surface conductivity at Τ — 4.2 К increases irreversibly and suddenly, regardless of the state of the surface, reaching a value of σ = (3-5) χ 10 4 ohm just as in the case of germanium bicrystals.
