A splitting of the ground multiplet of Pr3 + ions has been observed in the mixed-valence compounds Ce! _ x Prx Ni5 (0.1 <x<0.9 ). This splitting is evidence of a quasisteady crystal electric field. A component of the potential of this field stems from ions in a mixed-valence state in the crystal.
