A theory is derived for stimulated MandePshtam-Brillouin scattering in a "traveling" regime; numerical simulations have been carried out; and the effect has been observed experimentally in a glass optical fiber and in water (in each case, this is the first such study). The gain, the spectral width, and the broadening of the Stokes pulse are all estimated. The spectrum of the Stokes signal is predicted to change in a medium with an inhomogeneous refractive index.
