The collisional broadening of the absorption spectra of SF6 and CF2C12 molecules has been studied by diode-laser spectroscopy in a previously inaccessible pressure range. The Weisskopf cross section is observed to decrease with increasing frequency of kinetic collisions. The effect of the structure of the colliding molecules on this process is discussed.
