When atoms are adsorbed on the surface of nonconducting ionic crystal, a derealization of their electrons, which are drawn into the crystal, is possible. This results in an anomalous dependence of the heat of adsorption on the surface coverage and on the N-shaped I-V characteristic of the "surface metal".
