Dynamical properties of a finite one-dimensional conductor
The frequency dependence of the conductivity of a one-dimensional disordered system of finite size ζ has been determined. The static dielectric constant of an open sample is found to be proportional to z2 and much higher than that in an infinite system. The polarization of the sample initially increases as In3 t and then relaxes to a classical value as exp [ — (l/z)ln21] as a function of time t. A relaxation of this type apparently is characteristic of both a metal and an insulator of arbitrary dimensions.
