Gapless fermion excitations at vortices in superfluids and superconductors

A quantized vortex in a superfluid or superconducting Fermi system has gapless fermion excitations which are localized at the core of the vortex. The number of branches of gapless excitations—the number of fermion zero modes—varies from 0 to eF/A > 1, depending on the structure of the vortex core.
