Linear magnetoelectric effect and phase transitions in bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3

A new phase transition has been observed in BiFe03. It is a transition from a state with a spatially nonuniform cycloid structure to an antiferromagnetic phase. This transition is induced by a high magnetic field and is accompanied by a large increase in the electric polarization of the sample. The linear magnetoelectric effect has been measured in BiFe03.
